New and Exciting

At Green Hill Hostas we are all about new hostas! Every year we introduce several new hostas into the hosta trade. Some of these hostas are from our own hosta hybridizing program, (Bob Solberg introductions), and some of these hostas are from sports that we discover, test and then propagate for the gardening public. Other hostas are ones that we introduce for other well known hybridizers. This year we offer new hostas from among others, Jim Wilkins, Kirk Brill, Mark Zilis and Olga Petryszyn.

We think that new hostas should be better hostas. They should be distinct in some way, like the flowing habit, bright irregular variegation pattern and serrate leaf margins of 'Ginsu Knife'. They should be good growing garden plants, with slug resistance and substance like 'Unchained Melody' and 'Mississippi Delta'. They should have great color like 'Whirling Dervish', 'Thunderbolt' and 'Faithful Heart'. They can even be unusual, even a little bizarre, like the bicolor margin of 'Toy Soldier'.

Mississippi Delta
Hosta 'Mississippi Delta' (right)

New hostas are necessarily more expensive than hostas that have been propagated for years. Some of that extra cost is due to rarity and some of the cost is for royalties paid to hybridizers to reward them for all their years of hard work. New hostas also cost more because they are better hostas. One of the main reasons that new pickup trucks are more expensive than they were when I bought my last one in 1988 is that they have more value; they are better trucks. They have antilock brakes, improved steering, more efficient engines and all the other improvements from tires to door locks to paint. There really is frequently a correlation between price and value. It's true in hostas, too.

'Ginsu Knife' (Solberg 2002) - Imagine a wide, irregularly cream colored margined seedling of 'Irongate Supreme' and 'Green Fountain' with serrate margins and white fragrant flowers; the arching leaves have large undulations and some twisting; unique.

New Sports from the Labs

Hostas are chameleons and change their colors at a fairly frequent rate. Hostas can sport in the garden. Hostas can sport in a nursery but hostas can really sport in a tissue culture lab. Produce very large numbers of hostas and even the rarest of probabilities becomes common place. A mutation that occurs at a rate of one in ten thousand is bound to show up in the first couple of hundred thousand plants propagated.

Many mutations are bad. Not all sports are better hostas that perform well in the garden. Selection is as important with sports as it is with seedlings. Here are some of the newest available from the tissue culture labs. When making your selections remember, "if you know the parent then, you know a lot about the sport."(For one thing, you know that the flowers are the same unless mentioned.) If the parent grows well for you then the sport probably will too. Also, if you wonder what color the sport is don't look farther than the parent. The color of 'English Sunrise' is the same as the center of the leaf of 'June'. It will change throughout the season the same way for both hostas.

'Dust Devil' (Zilis 1999, sport of 'Whirlwind') - Medium, dark green leaf with a bright white margin that greens up some with summer heat; good substance.

'Sum of All' (Zilis 1999, sport of 'Sum and Substance) - The one that you have been waiting for, a green centered 'Sum and Substance' with a wide gold margin. Possibly larger than its parent it has better color and a wider gold margin than the other sports in this class; give a couple hours of strong light.

$25

'Summer Breeze' (Zilis 1999, sport of 'Summer Music') - Large spreading mound of dark green leaves with a very wide yellow-gold margin; very showy throughout the summer; much better grower than its parent.

Wylde Green Cream

Lovely Little Hostas

Unfortunately, none of us have unlimited space to plant hostas. Even the largest gardens finally begin to fill up. Frequently, however, it is our ability to maintain the garden that limits our need for new hostas long before the space runs out. Small hostas solve both these gardening dilemmas.

Obviously, planting hostas whose ultimate size is two feet wide or smaller reduces the amount of lawn that must be converted to hosta beds each spring. Looking at it another way, selecting small hostas allows you to buy that extra plant or two without worrying where you are going to plant them. You can always find room to tuck another little one in somewhere. Large hostas require more planning.

Small hostas are also lower maintenance. Small hostas are easy to divide. Many do not even require a knife, they just pull apart with your hands, and you will not need a crane to lift them out of the hole. Also, frequently they increase faster than large hostas so there are more surplus divisions to pass on to other hosta friends. Dividing small hostas every two or three years also keeps them small and it keeps them cute.

In the garden I like to see small hostas grouped in areas by themselves, away from their bigger brothers and sisters. Frequently these beds are raised, bringing these smaller plants closer to eye level. I have seen several of these "mini beds" mulched with gravel or small river rocks. The effect is both clean and eye-catching.

We used to see small hostas regularly used as border plants. Long rows of 'Golden Tiara', 'Gold Edger', and 'Kabitan' still fill my mind's eye. As collectors, many hosta growers cannot afford to allot so much space to any one cultivar any more. But for landscape effect, a border of almost any small hosta will define space as well as carry the eye around the garden.

We have listed several newer small hostas for you to try. And don't forget our "Great and Grand Tiara Special", they are all small plants too. We will be glad to answer any questions you may have about their growth habits. Remember, small hostas make great container plants too.

OUR INTRODUCTIONS

We are very proud of the hostas that we have introduced in the past. Some like 'Cody', 'Fried Bananas', 'Fried Green Tomatoes', 'September Sun' and 'Shiny Penny' are now widely grown. Of course 'Guacamole' is our most famous introduction and probably still our best all around hosta. It won the American Hosta Society's Award of Merit in 2000 and is the American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year for this year! It now ranks number 11 in the AHS Popularity Poll.

Over the last few years we have been focusing on blue hostas in our hybridizing program. 'Blue Monday', 'Carolina Blue', and 'Deane's Dream' are fine examples of different looking blue hostas, different in leaf shape, habit, and even color. 'Sunny Delight' and 'Sweet Sunshine' are gold hostas with fragrant flowers. They have the genes to make them more heat tolerant than most gold 'Tokudamas' and they grow better.

'Blue Monday' (Solberg 1998) - ('Peedee Gray Mulkin' X 'Popo') - Small mound of rounded, heart shaped blue leaves with heavy substance; orchid bell shaped flowers encircle the scape in June; a lovely little mound in the garden.

Most of these plants are blooming size single divisions but some are doubles. So, you could share these special Hostas with a friends or just plant both divisions in the same hole and have a really nice clump next season. Either way it is good value for good hostas.

Our Policy

All the hostas that we ship have been container grown from tissue culture liners for at least a season. They are guaranteed true to name and have never been divided. All come with our famous heavy root systems, ready to thrive in your garden. Also, if we feel our plants are smaller than we would like to ship you, we tend to add an extra plant to help get your clump established! Hosta Hosta!!
