Hybridizing A B C’s by Frank Nyikos is now available!

I am happy to announce that we have been able to secure a few copies of Frank Nyikos’ new book on hybridizing, Hybridizing A B C’s. Frank is a well known hosta and daylily hybridizer. Green Hill Hostas has had the pleasure of working with Frank to introduce several of his hostas including, ‘Libby’, ‘Powderpuff’, and ‘Awakening Angel’. The latter two are very fine blue hostas that have great, long lasting blue color.

I Hybridizing A B C’s is an excellent guide for gardeners who wish to try their hand at creating new varieties of their own. Frank shares his personal experience in planning and making hybrid crosses, growing seedlings and evaluating them. There is also an extensive section in the book on “General Plant Care” that includes a good discussion of plant nutrition, useful to any gardener. Finally, he emphasizes again and again the importance in record keeping both of his, and your, hybridizing program but also in a garden journal, recording notes on how maturing plants grow. It is a general hybridizing book and many different plants are referenced but hostas are mentioned extensively.
