September 2013 Retail Hosta Sale

 from Green Hill Farm

Hi to all:

What a difference a year makes!!! Last summer’s record heat gave way to this summer’s record rainfall and number of cloudy days. Temperatures over 90 degrees have been comparatively rare, never really even flirting with 100. You would think everything was perfect in Hostadom. Unfortunately, while hostas love water, day after day of high humidity and constantly wet foliage is more favorable for the growth of fungus than hosta leaves. Ironically, some hostas would rather have 100 degree days than weeks of constant rain.

This fall we have some great new hostas for you as well as some mix and match “Twofers”, “Two for $20” and “Two for $30”. We have four new small and miniature hostas for you to try, ‘Brentwood Blues’, ‘Baby Booties’, ‘Church Mouse’, and ‘Ruffled Mouse Ears’. We also have a few new red petioled hostas, the streaked ‘Sparkle’, ‘Rocket’s Red Glare’, ‘Cherry Flip’ and the white margined ‘One Man’s Treasure’, ‘Secret Treasure’. ‘Poseidon’ is a beautiful white margined form of H. plantaginea with double flowers and ‘Lakeside Paisley Print’ may be Mary Chastain’s prettiest variegated hosta.

If you have any questions please just give me or Nancy a call, 919-309-0649.

New Hostas for Fall 2013

‘Sparkle’ is a beautiful streaked hosta from Japan brought to America by Mark Zilis. It appears to be a H. longipes type with beautiful red petioles and scapes and striped flowers. The flowers do not appear to be useful in hybridizing but Nancy’s three year old plant is a show stopper!  Special Introductory Price $30.

‘Baby Booties’ is a great little hosta with a very showy white margin. It is a seedling of Doug Beilstein’s, a F2 cross of ‘Swoosh and H.capitata. It seems to grow very well.  Special $20.

‘Brentwood Blues’ is a wonderful sport of ‘Rhythm and Blues’ from Steve Watson of Brentwood, Tennessee. It has bright white margins on blue-green leaves with well-proportioned flowers. Special Introductory Price $20.

H. plantaginea ‘Poseidon’ is a hosta that Nancy has grown for several years on the back deck and we have finally been able to offer it for sale. We think it is the best variegated form of H. plantaginea ever. It also has double flowers with 34 petals that often do not open without a little help. Special $20.

‘Lakeside Paisley Print’ is maybe Mary Chastain’s prettiest variegated hosta. It is a medium-sized hosta with three colors in the leaf. I saw this in a tour garden this summer and had to have some to sell!!! Now specially priced @ $20.

‘Secret Treasure’ is a special hosta from Jan van den Top in Holland. Nancy fell in love with it when we visited Jan two summers ago. It is a beautiful white margined sport of ‘One Man’s Treasure’, a great blend of rich purple petioles and scapes, dark green leaves and bright white margins. Makes a great pot plant!!! Specially priced @ $20

‘Cherry Flip’ and ‘Rocket’s Red Glare’ are both nice red petioled hostas with shiny green leaves. Although ‘Cherry Flip’ is a medium green seedling of mine selected and named by Mark Zilis and it is a great red petiole breeding plant from my 48/49 line, I think I like Bev Stegeman’s ‘Rocket’s Red Glare’ a little better. It is an excellent seedling from ‘One Man’s Treasure’, I believe, with very shiny, bright green leaves and red petioles. It is blooming now for me. Google them both and see what you think. $20 each.

‘Church Mouse’ and ‘Ruffled Mouse Ears’ are new forms of all of our favorite ‘Blue Mouse Ears’. The former has a coarsely ruffled edge with maybe a little variegation, sort of like ‘Embroidery’. ‘Ruffled Mouse Ears’ has leaves that have long waves in them. Both are different and unique and a must for any collector of mice. Google these little guys, I am sure they are the talk of the web.  $20 each or “Two for $30”.
