August 2014 Retail Hosta Sale
from Green Hill Farm
Hi
to all:
Our late spring has blossomed into a
fairly normal summer. The hurricane stayed small and hugged the coast causing
little damage and almost no rain here. We have had several heavy downpours with
only a two week period of heat and drought. All in all about normal and the
hostas still look pretty good with just a little damage.
Again this fall, (late summer) we have
some great new hostas for you as well as some mix and match “Twofers”, “Two for
$20” and “Two for $30”. Please check them out below.
We are very happy to announce the
introduction of our newest hosta, ‘Ambrosia’ which we intend to patent. It has
a blue margin and a light yellow leaf center, is very vigorous and has fragrant
flowers. We also are introducing two of Doug Beilstein’s
newest hostas, ‘Envy’ and ‘Winter Frost’. For the
first time we are also offering that great frosty blue hosta
from the Stegemans, ‘Skylight’ and ‘Fashionista’ from Q & Z Nursery, a hosta that I am
liking more and more as it matures.
If you have any questions please just
give me or Nancy a call, 919-309-0649.
New
Hostas for Fall 2014
‘Ambrosia’
is
“the food of the gods” and this hosta is certainly good enough to eat. It is
simply divine. It is a blue-margined, light yellow-centered sport of my own
‘Guacamole’ that performs just as well in the garden, making a large clump that
enjoys bright light. Like ambrosia it is fragrant and may also have the same
mythological healing powers. We intend to patent this one. Special
Introductory Price $35.
‘Envy’
has
a very showy yellow margin that will become white in late summer. A seedling of
Doug Beilstein’s, it has a somewhat upright habit
making a medium-sized clump. It catches my eye from across hoop house. Special $20.
‘Winter Frost’ is the first of
a group of wonderfully ruffled, very blue hostas from
Doug Beilstein. As a young plant it looks striking
different from other blue hostas and matures into an elegant medium-sized clump
in the garden. It may replace ‘Jetstream’ as my favorite blue of Doug’s. Special
Price $20.
‘Fashionista’ is cleverly named after its parent
‘Designer Genes’. It has a pure white margin on brilliant yellow leaves with
red petioles in the spring. By the time its red scapes begin to appear the
leaves have darkened to a pleasing light green color making the plant a much
more vigorous medium-sized clump than expected. Grow this one in the shade. Below
is Nancy’s two year old plant in our mossy garden. Special
$20.
‘Skylight’
is
not really a new hosta but this is the first time we have been able to offer
it. It may be the waxiest blue hosta
ever. It looks spray painted white. I love this plant from Bev and Dave Stegeman and used it produce ‘Tarheel
Blue’ If you don’t have this medium to large beauty yet
here is your chance. Now just $15.
